Manchester United’s search for midfield reinforcements could lead them back to one of their long-term targets, with Brighton’s Carlos Baleba once again emerging as a serious option.
According to transfer journalist Ben Jacobs, the Red Devils already reached an agreement on personal terms with the Cameroon international during last summer’s transfer window. While the move never materialized, the player’s desire to join United reportedly remains unchanged.
With veteran midfielder Casemiro departing the club this summer, strengthening the midfield has become one of United’s biggest priorities. New manager Michael Carrick, who impressed during his spell as interim boss before earning the role permanently, has guided the club back into the UEFA Champions League, giving United a stronger position in the transfer market.
However, despite the improved outlook, INEOS and co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe remain determined to avoid inflated transfer fees.
United Reconsidering Baleba Move
Manchester United had previously explored moves for Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes, but both deals slipped away after the club refused to match the asking prices, allowing Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur to secure the players instead.
That has reportedly reopened the possibility of pursuing Baleba.
Speaking on the Market Madness podcast, Ben Jacobs explained that the midfielder is still interested in making the switch to Old Trafford.
“Carlos Baleba is still there. If Manchester United revisit that deal, the player wants Manchester United,” Jacobs said.
“Terms were agreed with the player last summer, but it depends on whether United want to revive the move after missing out on other targets. It also depends on Brighton’s valuation.”
Jacobs added that United valued Baleba at around £75 million last summer when the midfielder was enjoying his best form. However, after a season interrupted by injuries and inconsistent performances, the Premier League giants would be hoping to negotiate a lower fee.
Brighton, though, have built a reputation as one of England’s toughest clubs to negotiate with and are unlikely to lower their demands easily.
Price Could Be the Biggest Obstacle
United believe Baleba’s market value has dropped slightly compared to last year, but Brighton may still demand a premium fee given the rising transfer market and the large sums paid for comparable midfielders.
Whether the Seagulls are willing to compromise could ultimately determine if negotiations progress.
Rio Ferdinand Gives His Approval
Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand believes Baleba would be an excellent signing and sees him as the ideal long-term successor to Casemiro.
Speaking earlier this year on TNT Sports, Ferdinand praised the 21-year-old’s all-around midfield qualities.
“Baleba is a serious talent,” Ferdinand said. “He’s fearless on the ball, drives forward with confidence, and already shows maturity in how he reads danger and transitions play.”
Ferdinand highlighted the midfielder’s ability to recover possession, carry the ball through midfield, and thrive in a high-intensity system.
“If you’re looking at a long-term replacement for Casemiro, Baleba makes real sense,” he added.
“He’s got more energy, more mobility, and suits the modern Premier League. Compared to Aurélien Tchouaméni, he offers greater dynamism in transition, while defensively he’s more disciplined than Elliot Anderson. He may still be developing, but his profile is exactly what top clubs are looking for.”
United Face a Key Decision
Manchester United now face an important decision as they continue reshaping their midfield ahead of the new season.
With several alternative targets no longer available, Carlos Baleba has re-emerged as one of the club’s strongest options. Personal terms may already be settled, but convincing Brighton to lower their asking price could prove to be the biggest challenge before any deal can become reality.
