Crystal Palace made history on a memorable night in Europe, defeating Rayo Vallecano 1-0 to lift the UEFA Conference League trophy and crown an incredible era under Oliver Glasner in perfect fashion.

Jean-Philippe Mateta was the hero for the Eagles, scoring the decisive goal early in the second half to seal the club’s first-ever European title in front of a roaring crowd at the Red Bull Arena. Back in south London, thousands of Palace fans gathered at Selhurst Park erupted in celebration as the final whistle confirmed another unforgettable chapter in the club’s rise.

The winning moment arrived after Adam Wharton unleashed a powerful long-range strike that goalkeeper Augusto Batalla could only parry into danger. Mateta reacted quickest, tapping home from close range to send the Palace supporters into absolute delirium.

It was a fitting redemption story for the French striker. Just months ago, Mateta looked destined to leave the club after trying to force through a move to AC Milan during the January transfer window. The transfer collapsed after a failed medical, and now he has written his name into Crystal Palace folklore with the biggest goal in the club’s history.

The triumph marks Palace’s third major trophy in just over a year and comes only ten days after the anniversary of their stunning FA Cup final victory over Manchester City — the success that delivered the club’s first major honour.

Oliver Glasner’s reputation among Palace supporters was already secure after that Wembley triumph, but this European success elevates him even further into club legend status. In what was his farewell match as manager, the Austrian delivered one final masterpiece before departing Selhurst Park.

The final itself was tense and nervy for long stretches. Neither side managed a shot on target during a cagey first half, with both teams struggling to find rhythm in the intense atmosphere.

Palace almost broke the deadlock just before the interval when Tyrick Mitchell headed narrowly wide from an inviting Adam Wharton cross, but the teams went into the break level after a frustrating opening 45 minutes.

    Everything changed after half-time.

The Eagles emerged with far more urgency and purpose, eventually finding the breakthrough through Mateta’s poacher’s finish. From there, Palace looked the more dangerous side and came close to extending their lead several times.

Yeremy Pino rattled both posts with a stunning free-kick effort, while Mateta was denied a second goal by an excellent save from Batalla’s outstretched leg.

Rayo Vallecano threw everything forward in the closing stages in search of an equaliser that would have forced extra time, but Palace held firm under pressure to complete a famous victory.

The success carries extra significance for the Eagles after the disappointment surrounding their Europa League situation. Despite qualifying through their FA Cup win, Palace were demoted due to multi-club ownership regulations. Rather than dwell on the controversy, Glasner and his players responded in the best possible way — by conquering Europe on the pitch.

As the celebrations continued long into the night, Crystal Palace could finally say it proudly: European champions.
