Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga made a promising impact off the bench as France were held to a 1-1 draw by Italy at the Stade de France on Friday.
Camavinga was introduced as a substitute for Rayan Cherki as France looked to find a way through against a determined Italian side.
France eventually broke the deadlock in the second half when Michael Olise produced a stunning strike to put the hosts ahead. However, their advantage did not last long, as a mistake from Lucas Da Cunha gave Alessandro Bastoni the opportunity to level the score.
Camavinga was brought into the game and quickly showed his quality. He tested Gianluigi Donnarumma twice from outside the penalty area, with the Italy goalkeeper producing excellent saves to keep France from restoring their lead.
The Real Madrid midfielder also impressed with his passing and defensive work, showing good composure and energy during his time on the pitch.
Before Dayot Upamecano was sent off after receiving a second yellow card, Camavinga had been operating in a more advanced position. The dismissal forced France to defend deeper, and the midfielder subsequently took on more defensive responsibility.
Despite the difficult circumstances, Camavinga’s cameo was encouraging and could strengthen his case for a bigger role in the national team.
France will return to action on Monday night when they face Belgium in their final match of the international break. Camavinga will be hoping to earn more minutes and build on his positive performance against Italy.
