Norway’s dream run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup has hit an unexpected obstacle, with illness spreading through the squad just days before their biggest match in history.

After pulling off a remarkable 2-1 victory over Brazil in the Round of 16, Stale Solbakken’s men are now preparing for a quarter-final showdown with England in Miami. However, their preparations have been disrupted by a sickness bug and the physical toll of constant travel across the United States.

    Illness Sweeps Through Norway Camp

Several Norwegian players have struggled with illness during the tournament, raising concerns ahead of Saturday’s clash.

Forward Jorgen Strand Larsen missed Norway’s opening World Cup match after developing a fever, while defender Marcus Holmgren Pedersen was ruled out of the memorable win over Brazil after suffering from the same illness.

Despite the setbacks, Norway produced one of the biggest upsets of the tournament. Star striker Erling Haaland delivered another world-class performance, scoring twice to take his tournament tally to seven goals and fire his country into the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time.

But behind the celebrations, the squad has been battling exhaustion.

Head coach Stale Solbakken was seen coughing heavily after Norway’s 4-1 group-stage defeat to France and admitted that the relentless travel schedule, combined with changing climates and constant flights, has affected the team’s overall health.

    Solbakken Explains the Situation

Speaking about the condition of his players, Solbakken insisted the situation is manageable but acknowledged that the demanding tournament schedule has taken its toll.

“We’ve really only had Jorgen who has had a fever,” Solbakken explained.

“But there’s been a bit of coughing and rasping throughout the group. Between the air conditioning, flights, changing rooms and everything else, it’s probably not surprising. We’re more than 50 people together, so you’d almost expect someone to pick something up.”

The Norwegian boss remains optimistic that Pedersen could return in time to face England, although he expressed confidence in Julian Ryerson, who has performed well in his absence.

    Pedersen Feeling the Pressure

Solbakken believes Pedersen’s absence is not solely down to illness but also the emotional and physical demands of competing at the biggest tournament in world football.

“I think, without being a doctor, it’s a combination of everything,” Solbakken said.

“He’s a young player who probably came here expecting to be Julian’s backup. Suddenly he’s played two fantastic matches, experienced so much in such a short time, and I think both his mind and body have been overloaded. Sometimes the system simply needs a break.”

The comments underline just how intense Norway’s historic World Cup journey has been, with the squad navigating unfamiliar pressure while competing against the world’s elite.

England Also Dealing With Injury Concerns

Norway are not the only team facing fitness issues before Saturday’s encounter.

England booked their place in the quarter-finals after edging Mexico 3-2 in an entertaining last-16 contest and continue to rely heavily on captain Harry Kane, who has scored six goals during the tournament.

However, manager Thomas Tuchel has his own selection headache after Reece James was ruled out with a hamstring injury. England are also without experienced midfielder Jordan Henderson, leaving the Three Lions slightly weakened despite their impressive run.

    A Place in History Awaits

The quarter-final promises to be one of the most intriguing matches of the tournament.

England are chasing their first World Cup title since their famous triumph in 1966, while Norway stand just one victory away from reaching an unprecedented semi-final.

If Solbakken’s side can shake off illness and recover from the demanding travel schedule, they will believe another upset is possible. But with Harry Kane leading England’s attack and Haaland carrying Norway’s hopes, fans can expect a fascinating battle between two teams with very different histories but the same dream of lifting football’s biggest prize.
