“World Cup 2026: Germany vs Ivory Coast Clash for Last-32 Spot as Sweden Face Knockout Decider”

High-scoring Germany are set for a crucial World Cup showdown with a strong Ivory Coast side on Saturday, with both teams eyeing a place in the last 32 in what has quickly become one of the most competitive groups in the tournament.

A win for either side could seal qualification, while Sweden also remain in the mix to secure their own knockout-stage ticket as the group phase reaches a dramatic conclusion.

Germany arrive in confident mood after a ruthless 7–1 demolition of debutants Curaçao in their opening match. Another victory in Toronto against Ivory Coast would all but confirm them as Group E winners—especially if Ecuador fail to beat Curaçao in Kansas City.

For a nation with Germany’s football pedigree, simply reaching this stage is a relief. The four-time world champions have surprisingly struggled in recent tournaments, failing to get beyond the group phase since lifting the trophy in 2014 in Brazil. That drought has added pressure on Julian Nagelsmann’s side as they try to reassert themselves on the global stage.

Ivory Coast, however, are far from just opponents making up the numbers. A victory over Germany would also guarantee their own passage to the next round, underlining just how finely balanced this group has become.

Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann has already warned his squad about the threat posed by the Ivorians’ pace and physicality, particularly highlighting the danger of winger Nicolas Pépé.

“Their speed is one of their biggest strengths,” Nagelsmann said. “He was everywhere in the last game.”

Elsewhere, Sweden face a decisive clash against the Netherlands in Houston, knowing that victory would confirm their place in the knockout rounds. It marks a remarkable turnaround for the Scandinavians, who only reached the tournament through the Nations League pathway.

Coach Graham Potter has urged patience with striker Alexander Isak, who is expected to play a key role as the tournament progresses.

Isak endured an interrupted club season after his high-profile move to Liverpool, but he has already shown his quality on the world stage, scoring once and providing two assists in Sweden’s 5–1 win over Tunisia.

“Most players need time to reach top form,” Potter explained. “There’s more to come from him.”

In another landmark moment, Japan’s meeting with Tunisia in Monterrey will mark the 1,000th match in World Cup history—a symbolic milestone for the tournament.

Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu has warned his team to expect a high-intensity battle against a Tunisia side recently shaken up by coaching changes after Sabri Lamouchi became the first manager in World Cup history to be dismissed after just one game.

Friday’s action also brought clarity in several groups. The United States powered into the knockout stage with a 2–0 win over Australia in Seattle, sparking celebrations among the co-hosts.

Goals from Cameron Burgess (own goal) and Alex Freeman secured the result, while confirmation of Paraguay’s 1–0 win over Turkey ensured top spot in their group for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Mauricio Pochettino praised his team’s control of the match, saying they had handled a difficult opponent with maturity after a strong start to the tournament.

Brazil also continued their strong form with a comfortable 3–0 win over Haiti in Philadelphia, keeping their qualification hopes firmly on track. Morocco remain level on points with them after a narrow 1–0 victory over Scotland, with Ismael Saibari scoring the decisive goal early in the match.

With the group stages entering their final phase, several giants are already booking their places in the last 32, while others still face tense, winner-takes-all encounters in what is shaping up to be a dramatic World Cup week.Image Jun 20 2026 12 17 28 PM
