Arsenaal have been handed a significant boost in their efforts to keep Riccardo Calafiori this summer, with Real Madrid now appearing to have moved on from their interest in the defender.
The Spanish giants had been heavily linked with a move for the Italian centre-back, with manager Jose Mourinho reportedly viewing Calafiori as a key addition to strengthen his defensive line ahead of the new season.
Real have already been active in rebuilding their backline, with Denzel Dumfries and Ibrahima Konaté both expected to arrive. Calafiori was believed to be their preferred option at left-back, completing Mourinho’s defensive plans.
However, that move now looks highly unlikely.
Instead, Real Madrid have reached a verbal agreement with Chelsea for the signing of Marc Cucurella in a deal worth up to £51.7 million. The agreement reportedly includes an initial £47.4 million fee, with an additional £4.3 million in performance-related add-ons.
The final paperwork is still being completed, but the transfer is expected to be officially announced within the week, with Cucurella set to join after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
That development effectively ends Real’s pursuit of Calafiori and leaves Arsenal in a much stronger position.
The Gunners have made it clear they have no plans to sell the 24-year-old, especially with three years still remaining on his contract. There is no urgency for the club to cash in, and internally he remains highly valued by manager Mikel Arteta.
Still, Calafiori’s time in North London has not been without challenges.
Since joining Arsenal in 2024, injuries have repeatedly disrupted his progress. The Italian has missed 44 matchday squads for both club and country across nine separate injury setbacks — a record that has caused frustration among both Arteta and supporters.
His fitness issues also impacted Arsenal’s UEFA Champions League final preparations. Speaking before the match, Arteta revealed that Calafiori had picked up another issue during the week, ruling him out of both the starting lineup and a substitute appearance.
Despite those concerns, Arsenal continue to rate him highly and see him as an important part of their defensive depth. But given his injury history, a substantial offer in the future could still force the club to reconsider.
For now though, Arsenal can breathe easier — Calafiori looks set to remain at the Emirates, with Real Madrid turning their attention elsewhere.
